Before, during, and after your time abroad.
Before You Go.
Meet minimum requirements
- Completion of at least two full-time semesters at UAF, or 29 credits, before your first semester abroad.
- A cumulative GPA of 2.5.
Your program abroad may have additional minimum requirements, such as class standing, GPA, or language proficiency.
If you're an incoming transfer or non-traditional student, you're just shy of these requirements, or if you have any questions about your eligibility, please contact IPI.
Research programs
Look for a program that fits your needs in our list of affiliated programs. Some factors to take into account are:
- Minimum requirements of that program (GPA, language, class standing, etc.)
- Size of city and/or university.
- Courses offered.
- Finances.
Meet with UAF's Exchange and Study Abroad Advisor, Erica Keiko Iseri. You can also schedule an appointment with Erica.
Meet with your academic advisor to discuss how your plans for international education fit into your degree program here at UAF, especially as your degree may have certain restrictions. Also, you can discuss what courses you might take overseas.
Talk with international students, or returned UAF students, about international education and the school, city, or country, you're interested in.
Get your passport
If you haven't done so already, apply for or renew your passport as soon as possible!
Check out the U.S. State Department website for information on passports. The fee for a new passport is around $160.
Your application or renewal may take six weeks or longer, so please be sure to apply for or renew your passport as soon as possible!
NB: Many countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months after the end of your program abroad, so be aware of your passport expiration date.
Apply to IPI
Check out this site for application information!
Deadlines are:
March 1st for summer, fall semester, and full-year programs.
October 1st for spring semester programs.
December 1st for programs to Japan (excluding those via AsiaLearn).
(If the first falls on a weekend, the following Monday will be the deadline.)
Apply to your program
Exchange students must be nominated to the exchange university by our office, after which they will receive application materials for their program.
Study abroad students may apply to the program provider as soon as they have been approved by IPI.
Upon acceptance into your program, whether exchange or study abroad, you will receive information on course selection, housing, visa and immigration, etc.
Apply for your student visa
The process for applying for your student visa will vary from country to country. Please contact the UAF International Programs & Initiatives for more information about how to go about navigating the student visa process.

After You Return.
Transfer your credit home
Once you have completed your time abroad, you need to ensure that your credits are transfered back to UAF. Refer to our page on receiving credit from your host institution for more information.
Come see us
Make an appointment to come sit down with Erica to talk about your experience abroad. We use your feedback to continuously refine how we advise students and to help prepare future students for exchange and study abroad.
You can schedule an appointment with Erica by going to www.doodle.com/ekiseri.
Share your experience
Talk with us about how you can share your experience with the UAF and Fairbanks community. One of the most valuable parts of going abroad is being able to share the lessons you learned with others.
