Destinations by Program Type
Listed below are explanations of the different types of education abroad experiences offered at UAF, along with the destinations available for each type. Click on the text to expand it.

International Exchange
International Exchange programs are bi-lateral agreements between UAF and a university abroad, in which we exchange a certain number of students for a certain number of semesters.
As an exchange student, you pay the following to UAF:
- 15 credits of undergraduate UAF tuition (or 9 credits of graduate UAF tuition)
- UAF technology fee
- 2%-of-tuition network fee
- $300 processing fee
All other semester expenses are paid to the host institution or in the host country. These may include room and board, mandatory school fees (including textbook charges and course or materials fees), commuting expenses, and internet access. These semester fees vary according to host country and city, current exchange rates, and personal spending habits.
You are responsible for travel expenses to and from your host country.

north2north Exchange
north2north Exchange students have the opportunity to focus on issues relevant to the North and to northern populations!
north2north is the mobility program of the University of the Arctic, an international network of circumpolar institutions.
The fee structure for most north2north students is the same as for International Exchange students (see above for details).

Study Abroad students pay UAF only a $300 processing fee each semester they are abroad. All other fees are paid directly to the study abroad program provider.

Students who apply to one of these study abroad programs may be eligible for affiliation discounts and program scholarships.
While each program and site is different, program prices typically include tuition, room and board, health insurance, internet access, excursions, 24-hour in-country support, and much more.
Many of these providers also offer international internship and volunteer opportunities.
International Internships
You can earn college credit while working in your field anywhere in the world!
Through an international internship, you can:
- Gain professional experience.
- Apply your coursework to real-life challenges.
- Strengthen your foreign language and cross-cultural skills.
- Explore and pursue new international opportunities.
- Earn academic credit.

Independent Program
If you have a university, study abroad provider, or placement in mind that UAF isn't affiliated with, you can set up your own independent program for a totally unique experience!
In addition to the regular application process, you must also submit the following:
- Proposed dates and terms of attendance.
- A memorandum of approval of the academic department(s) within which you are requesting UAF credit. This memo must be issued by a faculty advisor and confirm that coursework has been reviewed and approved for UAF credit.
- Written documentation from the institution that an official transcript will be issued upon completion of your program and that the transcript will be sent directly to the UAF Office of International Programs (we cannot accept transcripts issued directly to students).
- Documentation confirming the institutional contact and/or advisor (including in cases of emergency).
- Documentation outlining accommodation options.

National Student Exchange
Through the National Student Exchange (NSE) you can study for a single term or an academic year at another campus in the United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands! While on exchange you will pay your normal tuition to UAF or pay the in-state or in-province tuition to your host college or university. Find out more information on our NSE Page.
