SCHOLARSHIPS FOR
INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION
This scholarship was established to promote international education among humanities or liberal arts undergraduate students by encouraging UAF students to study abroad and by helping foreign nationals from smaller, economically disadvantaged countries enrolled at UAF to complete their studies. The scholarship amount is $1,150 per academic year. Two scholarships are available for 2008-2009.
Qualifications
To be eligible:

1. Student must be a Junior or Senior enrolled in a College of Liberal Arts program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks during the semester(s) in which the award is to be in effect; and

2. Student must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 in his/her major and 3.3 overall (or equivalent) at the time of applying’ and
-
3. Student must be either a US citizen planning to study abroad for one or more semesters during the 2008-2009 academic year or a foreign national admitted to UAF on exchange or a regular degree program for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Forfeiture
A recipient selected for assistance in a forthcoming semester will forfeit the scholarship if:

1. The student does not enroll at UAF in the semester in which the award is to be in effect.

2. The student is placed on academic probation.
Application Procedure
Applicants must submit:
-
1. The Scholarships for International Education

2. A brief summary of your educational achievements;
-
3. A short essay (approximately 1200 words) in English that explains why you are interested in studying in a foreign country and how the scholarship might help you realize educational goals; and

4. Three recommendations by academic faculty of which at least one must be by a professor from your major discipline.
U.S. citizens/legal residents shall also submit:

5. A plan of action showing host country, institution, length of stay, courses to be taken or project to be pursued, contacts already established, etc.; and
-
6. A formal evaluation arranged through and approved by the Department of Foreign Languages (or its successor), of proficiency in reading, writing, oral comprehension and speaking in the host country’s language unless that language is English.
Foreign nationals shall also submit:
5. A statement as to why you need additional funds to complete your studies at UAF; and
6. A formal evaluation of your degree of mastery of English beyond the minimal test scores required for admission to the University.
