When should I apply?

The deadlines for OIP departmental applications are:

  • March 1 for fall semester
  • October 1 for spring semester
  • December 1 for all Japanese Exchange Programs - The following items are required for admission to all Japanese Exchange Programs: Sophomore standing or above. Completion of JPN202 or equivalent prior to departure. Minimum B average in Japanese language courses and the recommendation of UAF Japanese Language Faculty.

(Program and host institution deadlines vary, please use the UAF deadlines listed above - do not complete a host university or program provider application until you are approved by the Office of International programs and supplied with the correct application. These applications will be submitted by the Office of International Programs along with an individual recommendation. You will be advised of specific site application deadlines UPON APPROVAL of your UAF application.)

How long can I stay?

Most students go for either a semester or a full year. Additional options are also available such as summer and winter break programs. Some students even participate in multiple programs!

Do I need to learn another language?

We offer programs in English speaking countries. Many programs in non-English speaking countries offer content courses in English in addition to language programs for the best of both worlds.

What do I have to do to get there?

  • Come and discuss your ideas with our office staff.
  • Complete our departmental application.

  • Tie up details such as finances and UAF paperwork.

How much does it cost?

  • It varies from program to program and depends on the length of stay, type and number of services provided, cost of living at your destination, transportation costs.
  • Exchange program costs are similar to those at UAF because you pay UAF tuition.
  • Study abroad programs vary because you pay tuition and fees to the host institution or program provider.

Can I use financial aid?

  • YES! As long as the Director of International Programs approves your program, you will remain registered as a full-time student at UAF while you are on exchange or study abroad.
  • You will continue to receive your UA Scholars award while registered for any UAF-affiliated study abroad or exchange program.

What about my permanent fund dividend?

You should still be able to receive the dividend, as long as you are registered as a full-time student at UAF while you are away. You submit a Verification of Enrollment Form to the Registrar's Office and they verify your enrollment and send the form to the Permanent Fund Dividend office.

How about scholarships?

  • UAF administration supports exchange and study abroad and has recently designated a scholarship fund for students who choose to study at UAF-affiliated study abroad and exchange locations.
  • Some study abroad programs offer financial assistance.
  • Other scholarships are also available through sources on and off campus.

Will I earn credit towards my degree?

In almost all cases. Exceptions include not completing or failing courses; and in the case of independent study abroad, failure to provide an official transcript to UAF upon completion of the independent program.

How can I best prepare myself and plan for this experience?

  • Start dreaming about your experience!
  • Read up on places that interest you.
  • Visit the Office of International Programs.
  • Talk to students who have participated in UAF exchange or study abroad programs.
  • Enroll in a language course.
  • Make friends with international students you meet in your classes right here at UAF.
  • Participate in international events on campus such as international student social activities.
  • Make a plan with your academic advisor that includes an international component.
  • Start planning financially!
