UAF Students going abroad: International Student Exchange and Study Abroad Study abroad and international student exchange programs can broaden your view of the world while contributing academic credit toward your degree at UAF. In a study abroad experience you can master a foreign language, explore new lands and learn about other cultures. We encourage students to begin planning for a study abroad or international student exchange experience early in their UAF careers, particularly since prior study of a foreign language is often required. UAF offers two types of international study opportunities, International Student Exchange and Study Abroad. In both cases students are enrolled as UAF students while they are studying in a foreign setting, thus maintaining eligibility for financial aid, the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend, etc. Credits earned go directly to the students' UAF transcript. UAF Study Abroad or International Student Exchange programs are extremely economical compared to other such programs. International student exchange programs involve a reciprocal exchange of students with a partner university. UAF students on international student exchange programs pay tuition to UAF just as if they were attending school in Fairbanks. In addition they pay for transportation, room and board, and other living expenses at the partner university. Study abroad programs have no exchange of students. Instead, UAF has affiliated with some institutions to provide educational and student support services, at a cost, to our students. Because the students pay a program fee to the provider, they do not pay tuition at UAF; however they pay an administrative fee to UAF each semester and are enrolled as UAF students. In some study abroad programs classes are conducted at a study site other than a university in the host country. UAF
