Dr. Mary Ehrlander was one of the first graduates of the Northern Studies Program. Her thesis was entitled A Comparative Analysis of the Roles of the Constitutions as Reflected in Native Policy in the United States and Canada. After completing your MA in Northern Studies, Dr. Ehrlander earned an MA and Ph.D. in Government, with a concentration in American Government at the University of Virginia. Her dissertation was an analysis of the limitations of judicial policymaking as seen in the history of school desegregation in America. The dissertation was published in 2002 under the title Equal Educational Opportunity: Brown's Elusive Mandate by LFB Scholarly Publishing.
Upon completing her Ph.D., Dr. Ehrlander returned to Fairbanks and recently joined the Northern Studies and History Department faculties. Her research interests are alcohol cultures, problems, and policies in the circumpolar north, Scandinavian history, and Native sovereignty issues. Dr. Ehrlander says that one of the aspects of teaching in the Northern Studies Program she finds most enjoyable is the remarkably diverse and interesting students that the program attracts. They bring with them fascinating life experiences and have a wide variety of intriguing research interests.
