| APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 30TH Who: Students finishing grades 9-12 When: May 27 - June 1 Where: University of Alaska Fairbanks Cost: $325 The Mission: To inspire, educate, and develop values-based leaders committed to personal integrity, professional ethics, and selfless service. What is the Shelton Leadership Institute? The Shelton Leadership Challenge Institute is a six-day summer experience. Students earn 2 college credits upon successful completion of the institute. The curriculum is designed to develop leadership skills of all participants. The core curriculum focuses on leadership roles and accountability, team building, leadership styles and situations, motivating others, citizen responsibility, integrity as a leader, public speaking, changing behaviors, and goal setting. Daily review and reflection are key components for each exercise. Students are placed in leadership roles and learn to give and receive feedback on performance of leadership skills. What can I learn from participating in the program? Participants will: - Be able to articulate the General Hugh Shelton principles of values-based leadership, including honesty, integrity, compassion, diversity and social responsibility.
- Assess his or her baseline leadership skills and preferred practices.
- Identify leadership traits and competencies such as interpersonal skills, leadership styles, needs assessment, skills assessment, teamwork, goal orientation, motivating others, personal presence and public speaking, ethical decision making and changing behaviors.
- Practice integration of values-based leadership principles and traits in everyday leadership roles and responsibilities.
- Engage in youth-adult partnership models of civic engagement to increase social responsibility and intergenerational respect.
- Develop an appreciation of youth-adult partnerships and mentoring relationships for accomplishment of short-term objectives and lifelong goals.
- Prepare a leadership self-development plan for the next year and beyond.
How do I apply? Applications are available by mail or online; the deadline is APRIL 30, 2008. Applications are reviewed and processed on an incoming basis until all spaces are filled. The tuition to attend one week is $325, including lodging and meals. A deposit of $100 is due with the application. The remaining balance is due on May 1, 2008.
