Consortium to host fire science events in October

A $159,000 grant from the federal Joint Fire Science Program will establish the Fire Science Information Consortium pilot program in Alaska. The consortium will communicate the results of northern latitude and boreal forest fire science to federal, state, local and tribal land and fire managers. The program will also work with land and fire managers to ensure that information about research is useful.

The consortium will host two events this month:

Fire science technology transfer workshop. Friday, Oct. 16, 8:30 a.m. to noon, National Park Service conference room, 4175 Geist Road, Fairbanks.

Webinar, “Interagency Fuels Treatment Decision Support System,” by Stacy Drury, SonomaTech. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 10, 11 a.m. Contact Brook Gamble at accap@uaf.edu for dial-in instructions.

Possible projects for the consortium include an annual, in-person statewide workshop and tutorial for fire science delivery, a fire science newsletter, a statewide fire science teleconference/webinar series, information transfer workshops in rural communities and an Alaska fire science help desk.

The Scenarios Network for Alaska Planning and Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy at the University of Alaska Fairbanks are coordinating the consortium in partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey, Bureau of Land Management -- Alaska Fire Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service and the Fire Research and Management Exchange System.
