Placer mining workshop scheduled April 26-27 Submitted by Debbie Carter If there’s gold in them thar hills, Jeff Keener will teach would-be miners how to get it during a two-day placer placer mining workshop this weekend in Fairbanks. Keener, a geology graduate of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, has mined in Alaska, Nevada, Arizona and California, and started a mining business in 1987. He will share his expertise and firsthand experiences in a UAF Mining Extension-sponsored workshop Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27 in the University Park Building, Room 154. The 16-hour workshop will explore scientific and professional placer mining techniques in Alaska and is free. Topics include the basic geology of placer deposits, staking a claim and exploring a mine. Keener will also talk about methods of developing a mine, including plans, permits, economics and reclamation. The workshop will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Preregistration is requested and class size is limited to 16 participants. For information or to register, contact Meg Burgett at pnasb@uaa.alaska.edu or call 907-746-9472.
