Graduate Admission Guidelines

The deadline for submission of ALL application materials is January 10th. Application materials post-marked after the deadline will be considered for admissions and financial support, however, priority will be given to applicants who meet the deadline. Generally, students commencing their graduate studies in the fall semester will more likely receive financial support in the form of Teaching Assistantships. TA-ships offer full tuition awards and a monthly stipend (9 months).

You must have a Bachelors degree in order to apply to the UAF Masters program. UAF Master of Music degree is offered in performance area only. UAF does offer an Interdisciplinary Master of Arts degree. Please go to for more information.

The following documents must be submitted online through the UAF Graduate Admissions link

Include work and research experience, publications, honors, professional and civic memberships, and foreign travel.

Statement of Academic Goals
Write a statement indicating why study is desired in a particular program. Include qualifications and educational experience. (For applicants to education programs, a four-to-five-page self-evaluation essay is required).

Letters of Recommendation
Send at least three letters of recommendation from people able to vouch for the applicant's academic work, character and ability to undertake graduate study and research.

The following materials must be mailed directly to the UAF Office of Admissions

: The Office of Admissions requires official transcripts of all college-level course work. To be considered official, transcripts must arrive in sealed envelopes from each institution attended.  

Transcripts for International Applicants :
International applicants must submit official transcripts showing that a bachelor's degree has been or will be earned, and must submit certified English translations of transcripts of all college-level course work to the Office of Admissions.

Test Results :
Results of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) are required from applicants to most graduate programs. Some programs also require GRE subject exams. MBA program applicants are required to submit scores from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Refer to the admission requirements of your prospective degree program to determine which tests are required. Results of the GRE are required for all students whose undergraduate GPA is below a B (3.0) average regardless of the departmental requirement.

STEP 2 – Support materials for UAF Department of Music

Although your support materials will be forwarded to your primary UAF studio instructor, you should contact him or her directly to make it known you are applying for graduate admissions into the program. A list of all department of music faculty can be found at:

2) Statement of Purpose
Your statement of purpose should not exceed 1700 words or roughly three pages in length. Focus your Statement of Purpose on the reasons you are interested in attending the UAF graduate program. It should address your qualifications, your future goals in your area of specialization, potential research interests, and Teaching Assistantship duties you feel qualified to fulfill (please see “Supplemental Application Form” for TA-ship areas).

3a) For Music Performance, Composition, or Conducting Applicants
A repertory list of works (solo and chamber) performed, composed, and/or conducted during the past few years and a sample of printed concert programs in which you have participated, either as performer, composer, conductor, or collaborator.

3b) For all other areas of study
A minimum of two papers illustrating writing ability in any of the following areas: musical analysis, criticism, aesthetics, music theory, musicology, or music technology. For Music Education applicants, please submit a Philosophy of Music Education as one of yours papers.


Materials to Submit for the Master of Music in performance

Applicants interested in Music Performance should submit a DVD that includes a minimum of four unedited recent performances. Examples should show the applicant performing as both a soloist and in a small chamber setting if possible. Candidates are also permitted to submit links to uploaded videos on youtube or other sources. Please be sure to send the appropriate links to your principle advisor.
