Important Dates/Courses/Timelines for Graduation
First year of degree enrollment
Fall semester - students must enroll in MUS 625 Topics in Music History OR MUS 631 Seminar in Music Theory: History and Pedagogy
Spring semester - students must enroll in MUS 601 Introduction to Graduate Study
Second year of degree enrollment
Fall semester - Oral Comprehensive Exam^
Spring semester - Graduate degree Recital (prior to Project Paper Defense)*
Spring semester - Project Paper Defense**
^Oral Comprehensive Exam must be taken in the fall semester of second year of your degree program
*Graduate degree recitals require a pre-recital hearing. Preparation and scheduling of the this pre-hearing will be made in conjunction your studio teacher. Your pre-hearing must occur no later than two weeks prior to your tentative degree recital date. You must perform your degree recital after your Comprehensive Exam has been passed and prior to your Project Defense Date.
**The final draft of your Project Paper must be received by your committee no later than two weeks prior to your Project Paper Defense date. Your Project Paper must be successfully defended and each member of your committee must sign the Report on Project Defense form. This paperwork must be received by the graduate school no later than their April deadline (see Graduate School website for specific date) of your graduating spring semester. For this reason, your defense must occur no later than one week prior to this deadline. This allows time for required revisions and editing as recommended by your committee at the defense.
Graduate students are responsible for ensuring all required graduate forms found in the graduate packet are signed and submitted at the appropriates times to the appropriate faculty and departments. Please refer to your graduate packets for forms and dates.
Important dates regarding forms found in your Graduate Packets:
Appointment of Graduate Advisory Committee form
Must be submitted to the Graduate School no later than the last day of classes, spring semester, first year
Report of Graduate Advisory Committee (completed by the committee)
Must be submitted to the Graduate School no later than the last day of classes, spring semester, first and second year
Graduate Study Plan (GSP)
Must be submitted to the Graduate School no later than the last day of classes, spring semester first year (can be changed and resubmitted if necessary)
Application for Advancement to Candidacy for the Master’s Degree
Must be submitted one semester before you plan to graduate - this document replaces the GSP in your file once submitted
