The UAF music department fosters small group interaction using the jazz idiom as a point of departure in selective, auditioned jazz combos. Ranging from traditional groups to exploratory free-jazz ensembles, the UAF small group jazz experience encourages and acknowledges creativity at all times. Groups explore acoustic and electronic instrumentation and give performances in culturally relevant venues such as coffee shops and community centers. This semester, the KORG KP3 Kaoss pad combined with the KORG Kaossilator serve as a means to organize combo-generated sounds in group-composed arrangements that hearken to John Steven's work, the Sun Ra Arkestra and Ornette Coleman's visionary ideas.
