Required Participation in Music Performance Ensembles

Music Performance skills learned in music performance ensembles are essential for all music students.  Students also learn performance disciplines, practice routines, techniques of rehearsal, and expand their knowledge of music repertoire.   There are two types of music performance ensembles at the UAF Department of Music:   large ensembles, and small ensembles.

The courses defined as large ensembles are:   MUS 101: University Chorus, MUS 211: Choir of the North, MUS 203: Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, and MUS 205 :Wind Symphony.

All undergraduate music majors are required to complete a minimum number of large ensemble credits to meet their undergraduate curriculum requirements at UAF. These ensembles must be registered for credit; they may not be audited.   The minimum required number of ensemble credits varies depending upon the degree program selected. Students must also be enrolled in an ensemble (large or small) appropriate to their area of private lesson study, even if this enrollment exceeds the minimum number of credits minimally required for the degree program.

Piano majors may substitute up to two credits of MUS 307: Chamber Music: Accompanying for two credits of the Large Ensemble participation requirement.   Wind and percussion instrumentalists are required to take a minimum of four credits MUS 205.

Students registered in music ensembles are required to musically participate on all concert appearances presented by that ensemble.   Failure to participate in a concert performance for the ensemble (unless the reason is truly catastrophic) will likely result in an F grade for the course.

In order to increase the familiarity of music students with performance mediums that may be foreign to them, vocal or keyboard students may be required to participate in one of the large instrumental ensembles. Similarly, non-keyboard instrumental students may be required to participate in one of the choral ensembles. Non-music majors are encouraged to participate in the large ensembles. Similarly, students whose principal performing instrument is a band or orchestral instrument may be required to participate in either or both of these organizations at the discretion of the directors involved and with the concurrence of the Department Head.

The UAF Music Department also provides opportunities for participation in small ensembles. These ensembles (often referred to as chamber music), provide a smaller music performance environment for every music major. Small chamber group participation is encouraged at UAF.   There are vocal, brass, woodwind, jazz and string chamber ensembles available to students at UAF under the course number MUS 307. Students whose principal performing instrument is a band or orchestral instrument may be required to participate in some of these organizations at the discretion of the director and with the concurrence of the Department Chair.

Enrollment in Mus. 307 is not considered a substitute for the Large Ensemble requirment.
