Biological surveys in Prince William Sound have documented the presence of over 1645 animal species. However, most research in the area has focused on a very small set of species, mostly mammals, birds, and fish. This annotated species list and bibliography is intended to help answer the need for species-level information on annelid worms, molluscs, crustaceans, echinoderms and other invertebrates. The species lists derive from three primary sources, first, from lists of animals identified as part of environmental surveys of the Gulf of Alaska, Prince William Sound, and Port Valdez in the late 1970's and early 80's. Species names from field guides and taxonomic revisions of characteristic northeastern Pacific taxa are included. The third major source for names of Prince William Sound species is the collections of the University of Alaska Museum (UAM). Information is lacking or for several groups of animals: sponges, Anthozoa, Nematoda, Oligochaeta, ostracods, so that these are under-represented or absent in the species lists. Species identified to generic level, but not to species are not included. For further information, suggestions, or corrections, please contact Nora Foster.
