Location & Geography
Anchorage, Alaska was built on a peninsula in Cook Inlet near the spot where Laurence painted this scene. Cook Inlet is alive with wildlife. Whales can be seen during their seasonal migrations. Salmon also migrate through Cook Inlet. Seals and otters and hundreds of other kinds of animals and sea life make their homes there. Now Alaska's largest city, Anchorage was established in 1913 as the construction camp and headquarters of the Alaska Railroad. How do you think Anchorage got its name? Do you think it was because it is a good place to anchor a boat?
