Introduction
An Inupiaq hunter sits on the sea ice waiting patiently for any sign of a seal coming to the surface of the open water. He is dressed in a warm parka, leggings, and mukluks (winter skin boots) and his harpoon and rifle are at the ready. Do you think this Inupiaq hunter sees the polar bear that has just emerged from behind the ice? What do you think happened next?

The word Eskimo is a general term that includes many different Native groups in Alaska. One of the groups that live the farthest North of all the Eskimo people is called the Inupiaq. For hundreds of years the Inupiaq have hunted seals to provide food and clothing for their families. Living off the land and sea is called a subsistence lifeway.
