Off to the Trapline!

Location and Geography

Does the painting remind you of places you have visited? The artist, Fred Machetanz, lived in Unalakleet between 1935 and 1937. Do you think Machetanz saw a dog team there? Alaska Natives have used dog teams for transportation and hauling freight for more than two hundred years.

The village of Unalakleet is located on Norton Sound on the western coast of Alaska. The weather is cold and dry in the winter and cool in the summer. People live by commercial fishing, subsistence activities, and tourism. Planes fly in and out of Unalakleet often. Summer travel is by 4-wheelers and boats, and winter travel is by snowmachines and dogsleds.
