Off to the Trapline!

About the Artist

Fred Machetanz came from Ohio to Alaska in 1935 to visit his uncle's trading post in Unalakleet. After serving in the military during World War II, he returned to make Alaska his permanent home. He and his wife, writer Sara Dunn, live today near Palmer in the home they built together in the 1950s.

Machetanz has had a long and successful career as an artist. He captures Alaska's landscapes, people, and animals in a romantic style of painting. His oil paintings hang in many public buildings and in private collections around the world.
