Community Collaboration (in Inupiat)
Planning the People of Whaling Exhibit - Community Collaboration

The project’s goal was to work in collaboration with the Barrow community to develop an exhibit and education program. An exhibit planning team was formed with Inupiat Heritage Center, Iñupiat History, Language and Culture Commission, Iñupiaq elders, community cultural experts from Barrow organizations, including the North Slope Borough School District and Ilisagvik College, and University of Alaska Museum of the North staff.

We chose to base the exhibit on traditional and modern whaling and the seasonal round of subsistence activities. The elders emphasized the importance of passing on survival and traditional knowledge to our young people and presenting it from an Iñupiat perspective. The exhibit team and community members have reviewed all work throughout its development.
