Field Trips

A field trip to the Museum will enrich your lessons, engage student interest and create lasting memories. Plan an Exhibit Exploration or Directed Discovery for your class and ignite their curiosity.

We have many resources designed to help you prepare for your field trip or to explore museum science, art and collections from your classroom.

Exhibit Exploration (preK-12) -- Self-guided

Directed Discovery (K-6) -- Docent-assisted

UAMN volunteer docents guide student explorations and activities centered on museum research and collections. Teachers and chaperones also play a critical role in Directed Discovery field trips. Directed Discoveries are allotted to local schools. See your administrator for details.

Available: Tues-Thurs. All tours begin at 9:30 AM.

Scheduled on call-in day, August 28, 2013.

Cost: Admission sponsored by Flint Hills Resources (free)

Maximum: 30 students (15 students min). Chaperones required.

Alaska Native Cultures
Explore the rich diversity of Alaska Native cultures and discover objects in the Gallery of Alaska.

Grades K-1 1 hour

Develop awareness of the cultural diversity of our state.

Grades 2-3 1.5 hours

Experience fish camp and explore the Gallery of Alaska to learn about Athabascan traditions and seasonal activities in Alaska’s Interior.

Grades 4-6 1.5 hours

Examine cultural connections to regional resources and take part in a trade game to learn about bartering traditions.

Exploring Art

Discover the Rose Berry Alaska Art Gallery and practice discussing artworks through the vocabulary of art elements. Utilize skills of observation and self-expression to study and sketch during free-choice gallery time.

Grades K-1 1 hour

Grades 2-6 1.5 hours

Museum Science

Discover how museum collections represent millions of years of biodiversity and can teach us about our world.

Grades K-1 1 hour

Find animals in the Gallery of Alaska while practicing observing and comparing.

Grades 2-3 1.5 hours

Apply skills of sorting and classification and learn why they are important to science.

Grades 4-6 1.5 hours

Examine and compare skulls to learn about animal characteristics and adaptations.

Add-Ons (Advance reservations required for all add-ons).

Special Exhibit $4 per student

Denali Legacy: 100 Years on the Mountain. Through April 12, 2014.

Take your class to the new exhibit Denali Legacy and download our activity guide (available in Fall).

Gallery Exploration Free

Schedule 20-30 extra minutes after your Directed Discovery to self-guide your students though another of the museum’s galleries (including Fairbanks Children's Museum exhibits).

Local volunteers guide all Directed Discoveries. If you are interested in helping, see our online flyer (Become a Volunteer Docent!) or call 474-5360.
