Destructive Sampling Policies

Destructive sampling requests are regularly filled from our collections. Requests are usually made for studies of genetics, stable isotopes, or contaminants. These investigations consume portions of the existing specimen material, and as a consequence these requests are given careful consideration prior to approval. Researchers must at a minimum demonstrate that they have successfully used the technique(s) that they propose to employ on the requested material. Requests for destructive sampling for genetic samples and/or for samples from traditional specimens (skins and skeletons) should follow guidelines for the Destructive Sampling of Specimens.
