The university's Polar Bears deliver a stunning 6-5 upset win over the visiting Dawson ice hockey team at the 1936 Fairbanks Winter carnival. The university's athletic teams eventually became known as the Nanooks, which comes from the Inupiaq Eskimo word for polar bear.
