Placement of Dumpsters and Garbage Receptacles on Campus

To: Chancellor Joan K. Wadlow
From: John D. Craven, Chair
UAF Master Planning Committee
Date: June 10, 1999
Subject: MPC Recommendation Related to the Placement of Dumpsters and Garbage Receptacles on Campus

At the request of UAF Facilities Services, the Master Planning Committee has drafted a recommendation on location and visual appearance for UAF trash dumpsters and other external waste containers (smoking materials not including). The recommendation is based on existing '91 Master Plan statements on aesthetics, with the intent of accommodating a safe, and visually pleasing campus setting

Recommendation

  1. Dumpsters and other large exterior trash containers shall be located at service entrances and at the rear of buildings. Dumpsters shall not be located in primary visual or heavily traveled pedestrian traffic areas. Natural screening of dumpsters is encouraged.
  2. Color selection, such as a single brown earthen tone, is guided by the need to blend into the background. Bright colors, colored tops, and the UAF logo are not to be used.
  3. Physical and code requirements must be followed.
    • As per the UAF fire code, dumpsters cannot be located within 10 feet of combustible building walls or openings nor be located below windows or under roof eaves/overhangs.
    • Dumpsters are to be located on a level, all weather surface; gravel, pavement, or concrete.
    • Dumpsters are to be located such that pickup can be accomplished by truck with minimal manual movement.
    • Dumpsters are to be located so as to not complicate snow removal or to be blocked by piled snow.
  4. General requirements for exterior waste containers. Exterior waste containers must be easily accessible by pedestrians, as transportable as necessary to service while not being readily moveable, designed with campus aesthetic guidelines in mind, considerate of local surroundings when selecting colors and textures, and constructed of natural materials and earthen tones.
