UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA FAIRBANKS
MASTER PLANNING COMMITTEE (MPC)
MEMORANDUM

July 22, 2005

R:W

At its regular meeting on July 7, 2005, the UAF Master Planning Committee unanimously approved the following recommendation (MPC 05-05) regarding West Ridge parking. This recommendation is based upon a May 4, 2005 report (see attached) to the MPC prepared by its Circulation and Parking Subcommittee (C&P). A quorum was established; 6 MPC members were present.

The recommendation reads:

1) West Ridge parking plans should immediately target an average utilization of 80%, as there is inadequate capacity of peak hours. This means that there is an immediate need for construction of a minimum of 29 additional powered parking spaces.

2) Electrical service shall be provided to all permanent parking spaces. Existing temporary parking spaces shall be upgraded, either in-site or through relocation, to permanent status.

3) Planning for future parking needs on West Ridge shall take into account parking lot/surface area estimates discussed in the C&P Subcommittee’s May 4, 2005 report. This should include shuttle transportation from other locations, just as occurs on Lower Campus.

4) Existing contractual arrangement for parking involving West Ridge units (ex. National Weather Service) should be reviewed and reconsidered in light of the growing demand for parking.

5) Location of new parking facilities on West Ridge is directly related to the final location of the Tanana Loop extension. Therefore, it is critical that a design study for the road extension be carried out.

Approved by the MPC 6-0-0 (motion: Newman / second: Andersen)
