| Subject: | MPC recommendation 03-07: “UAF campus quad: Longterm concept plan” |
At its regularly scheduled meeting on July 24, 2003, the UAF Master Planning Committee (MPC) unanimously approved the following recommendation regarding a longterm concept plan for the UAF campus quad (aka ‘College Hill Quad’). We request your review and approval of this recommendation.
RECOMMENDATION: The UAF Campus Master Planning Committee recommends approval of the longterm concept plan for the UAF campus quad as presented to it by Facilities Services on July 24, 2003 (see attached). Major elements of this plan include a greenhouse/reading room adjacent to Rasmuson Library, relocation of all Signers’ Hall parking to the south Signers’ and Eielson lots, creation of a sloped lawn/amphitheater and multiple circular gathering spaces, retention of flags and the Bunnell statue, addition of an interpretive mining walkway between Brooks and Bunnell buildings, expanded landscaping and walkways, and other features.
In approving this concept plan, the MPC supports a strategy for inviting further public comment and for development a fundraising plan to help UAF realize its longterm goals for the quad. The strategy should include opportunities in fall 2003 for public comment and development of cost estimates for design and construction that can be used in seeking funding. The MPC also anticipates the need to review and update the concept plan before any detailed design work is undertaken.
We are excited about the possibilities of making this quad an attractive and inviting year-round gathering space for the entire UAF community.
Thank you.
