New Campus Master Plan
Rich reminded members of the importance of engaging in the revision process of the campus master plan with Perkins+Will (P+W).
P+W next will come to campus on November 16 and 17. They will meet with the MPC.
Jonathan summarized the previous P+W campus visit.
P+W will present some of their findings and gather new information on their next visit.
Deb pointed out that P+W's initial analysis showed that UAF has a high ratio of grant dollars:FTE and insufficient space for research.
P+W will define the amount of space that is substandard.
There was a general discussion of ensuring communication between P+W and constituencies (students, faculty, staff, FNSB). Jonathan will convey to Jenny Campbell the need to work with Scott McCrea to set up communication events for P+W's next visit.
Old UPark Building Update - Deb Horner
There are heating problems with the west wing of OUP.
Linda Zanazzo concluded that the west wing can be used through the spring, though classroom temperatures may be cool.
The district office of Cooperative Extension is moving off campus to Denali Building. This will free up office space.
Options are being considered for the Art Dept. and others that use the west wing of OUP.
West wing will be demolished after it is vacated.
Troth Yeddha Park - Deb Horner
Deb conveyed that the firm Jones & Jones has completed a draft plan.
Rich asked if someone can summarize the major elements of the plan.
Annette Freiburger gave an overview. The goal is to create an inviting, gathering space for the campus community. The site will include trails and a building (space for indigenous PhD students and native archives).
Deb pointed out that Troth Yeddha will convey the importance of Alaska's First Peoples and Alaska Native culture.
Jenny Carroll suggested that the plan may be ready for MPC review within ~ 2 months.
Facilities Services Update - Jonathan Shambare
There are sewer problems between Wood Center and Wickersham Building. Upgrade/repair work will require the cutting of several trees.
Luke asked if any of the trees could be safely removed and retained overwinter for spring re-planting. Rich suggested that John Alden could do an assessment and make recommendations.
Bear has been landscaping the area north and south of the Fine Arts Building.
ATCO installations by AHRB and O'Neill are in progress and will be ready by ~mid-November.
Facilities is developing a lighting master plan.
A street lamp with an LED light will be tested at the intersection of Yukon Drive and Tanana Loop Road.
Gary asked about lighting and electrical issues in Kodiak building. Jonathan answered that the assessment is still underway.
Luke suggested that LED lights might be considered for the lighted trails on North Campus. Jonathan will convey the idea to those evaluating LEDs on campus. Luke also suggested that the lighting on the west edge of campus (by Sheep Creek Rd) deserves attention.
