Subcommittee Reports
Campus Landscape and Outdoor Art (Deb Horner)
Deb will be recommending installation of some planters outside Bunnell by the Schaible
Auditorium entrance.
Luke commented on the landscaping plan for Ballaine Lake. A long-range issue is ADA accessibility by the picnic table and by the water. Should UAF provide ADA accessibility?
Deb asked Bill if UAF is required to provide ADA accessibility.
Luke suggested that the Ballaine Lake working group of the North Campus
Subcommittee make a presentation to the MPC. Deb suggested a presentation first to the Campus Landscape and Outdoor Art Subcommittee.
North Campus Subcommittee (Luke Hopkins)
NCS met at the end of April and developed an annual work plan for North Campus. Stan Justice increased the UAF Trails Club contribution to Facilities from $6000 to $9000 to improve the ski hut, with a focus in particular on improving the roof. Facilities has funding to help with the project as well; the project will move forward.
Deb pointed out that a shelter would likely be included in a plan to develop Troth Yeddha. A possibility would be to re-locate the ski hut to the Troth Yeddha area.
The NCS received a research proposal to conduct a bird nesting study at the T-field as one of several sites (including Creamers Field). The NCS approved the proposal with the caveat that motorized access not be allowed unless for emergency access. Other researchers in the North Campus are allowed motorized access. Luke may bring the issue to the MPC for consideration at the next MPC meeting. The applicant plans to appeal the decision regarding restriction of motorized access.
NCS received a new proposal to establish a long-term research project in the T-field, which is a special management area under the control of the UAF Farm and SNRAS Dean. The project will create an 80-150-yr balsam fir plot in the T-field. Recommendation to contact Carol Lewis to express our concern that the process for evaluation of the site was not followed according to the North Campus Plan. Rich will contact Carol.
Outdoor Days will take place next week.
Facilities Services Update (Jonathan Shambare)
Work planned on electrical facilities over the summer. Road across from the power plant will be closed for ~3-4 weeks.
Major sewer work will be underway this summer.
Public Comment – none
Update on solicitation to secure consulting firm for new campus master plan
Working group will interview via videoconference 5 possible firms for selection.
Representation on working group for new campus master plan
Deb presented the suggested representation for the working group that will work with the consulting firm on the campus master plan revision. The group would include two MPC members (Rich and Deb), three faculty (representing research, teaching, and service), one Facilities representative, and one community representative. MPC members agreed with the suggested membership for the working group.
Other – none
Meeting adjourned at 10:55A.
The next meeting of the Master Planning Committee will be held Thursday May 21, 2009
in the Chancellor’s Conference Room.
