Subcommittee Reports
Campus Landscape and Outdoor Art (Deb Horner)
Subcommittee met last week.
Working group within the Subcommittee has met to consider re-design of Ballaine Lake area. Some significant issues (e.g., bank-side erosion) have been identified. A variety of options (e.g., ADA accessibility, plantings) have been considered.
Work continues on re-design of learning habitats.
Webinar on creative master planning will be presented here next Thursday; both MPC and Campus Landscape committee members are invited to participate. Exhibit on renewed landscapes in the borough is on display at the UA Museum.
North Campus Subcommittee (Luke Hopkins)
Luke submitted Army Corps of Engineers permit for work to stabilize bank area at Ballaine Lake.
Transition is underway from winter to summer activities.
Next scheduled meeting is on April 25. Subcommittee expects to approve maintenance plan for summer.
Two research permits are about to be submitted. One is for the placement of birdhouses. Groomer on staff until the end of April; he will return in August.
Facilities Services Update (Jonathan Shambare)
Formal project approval received for Energy Building from BOR; it will be next to physical plant. Funding is not yet in place; most would be via a bond. Some private funds are expected as well.
A research building has been considered for West Ridge; a possible location is the area south of O’Neill and between Irving and Elvey. The funding would be from NIH as part of the federal stimulus package. Construction of new space in the courtyard of the Arctic Health Research Building is also a possibility, with the same source of funding.
Dedication of the Lena Point facility will be the week after next.
Public Comment – none
Update on solicitation to secure consulting firm for new campus master plan (Jonathan Shambare and Deb Horner)
Over a hundred queries have been received. Some major national firms have considered submitted proposals. Closing date is April 16. Mike Ruckhaus would like to make their selection within a week of the closing date.
New artwork proposal for Virology Building (Deb Horner)
A model of the new proposed sculpture was displayed.
The Campus Landscape and Outdoor Art Committee approved the model.
“The Master Planning Committee endorses the proposed exterior sculpture, inspired by the electron micrograph images of viruses, for installation outside the new state Virology Building. We request special consideration be given to the lighting regime, given the extreme differences in the length of daylight and darkness over the year, the properties of the diachroic glass, and the placement on the north side of the building.”
Gary Newman endorsed the question, seconded by Joe Hayes.
Motion passes unanimously 8-0.
LIDAR Hut
The committee discussed the idea.
The hut was originally approved as a temporary location. The area is within a protected viewshed.
Is there a camouflaging action that might be possible? Could it be a structure that is associated with the greenhouse?
East or west side of Butrovich should be considered as an option. West of Chapman Building may be another option.
Overall the idea received a mixed response.
Other
Gary reported on Sustainable Taskforce; it will forward a cost estimate to the Chancellor. One recommendation is the formation of a sustainability office.
Dana Thomas pointed out there is a growing interest in establishing a childcare facility on campus. There is a federal grant program that provides funds (~$300 k/yr) to help parents pay for childcare costs when the parents are attending school. No campus space for a childcare program is available.
The next meeting of the Master Planning Committee will be held Thursday April 16, 2009 in the Chancellor’s Conference Room.
