North Campus Area Management PlanInformation on the Walking Trails Issue Winter Walking Trails on North Campus During the recent planning process for the UAF North Campus, the North Campus Subcommittee (NCS) received input on the importance of providing walking trails in the winter. Both written comments and survey results indicated support for expanding winter walking trails. As a result of that input, one of the tasks listed in the North Campus Plan is to consider increasing the number of groomed winter walking trails. However, the NCS does not have information on the design of winter trails desired by walkers. Currently there are two walking trails designated in the winter; Pooch Loops and Walk to Smith Lake. Neither trail is formally maintained during the winter nor do they make clear connections to the trailheads at the ski hut or West Ridge. In addition to these trails, walking is allowed on the Range Road and the road to access the ASF (i.e., the SAR dish) [ Map ] The NCS is currently exploring ideas on groomed winter walking trails.
