My wife occasionally uses the trails for natural history classes of elementary school children (she is a teacher) She also participates in the Natural History days at the campground/ski trails for elementary students. At that time several hundred kids use the area.

Plant identification for son's science class

Outdoor Days--couple days every May.

Nature tour 12-15 times/summer on trails above gardens and down to Smith Lake and up the old wizzies trail.

Ski club at Ballaine lake.

Biology class field trips to Smith Lake (summer sessions)

My Girl Scout troop (I'm the leader) took part in a day of "marine" biology on Smith Lake. It was put on my UAF Grad Students and involved both collecting data from the lake and evaluating it and discussing what they learned back in the lab. This took place in March 1999.

Intro. To aquatic ecology for 4th and 5th graders at Ballaine Lake

I have been an instructor at Outdoor Days for several years.

Was North Pole Middle School x-c ski coach and we used the West Ridge ski trails to train 2x/yr and then for ski races.

Walked with kids from Pearl Creek school along the trails to UAF museum

Natural history with young kids on trails to the lake.

Informal guided tour given by Dr. Pat Holloway in forest area near Botanical Garden.

Aquatic Entomology, Ecology, Biology 105, etc.

Scout merit badge workshops--oceanography & limnology (aquatic sampling)--about 2/month during the winter at Smith Lake and access trail from Sheep Creek Road.

Girl Scout Water Wonders Merit Badge work. Every weekend in the winter around Smith Lake.

I took two field trips to smith lake for biology 105-106 (spring) and for Marine science and limnology (winter).

Natural history of Alaska class. The trail behind the dorms to look at thermokarst and north slope effects

I took my two BIOL 271 (General Ecology) labs out on the trails to access short term vegetation plots. We used the trail mainly from Hess towards Ballaine Lake. However, an additional lab is based on the Calypso Orchid Trail.

Boone's ecology class and Follmann's mammology, both on the outskirts of the trail system.

Plant ecology- behind west ridge

My class was involved in small animal trapping behind Irving

West Valley High school Biotechnology class - we canoed and took mud samples from Smith Lake.

I took the cross country skiing class and learned how to classic and skate ski on the UAF trails. This experience was invaluable.

Went on a class trip to Smith Lake to collect water samples in Oceans 111x class

For my Silviculture class we went out to almost next to the musk ox farm to look at a permanent sample plot.

The Forest Ecology class has several labs out there.
