UAF Skarland Trail System Management Plan

UAF Trails 1999 User Survey Results

March 2, 2000

Use of the Trails for Research Purposes

Lab for WLF 201 - tree densities and snow depths

Collect insects, frogs, trap small mammals for over-wintering biology (along trails to Smith Lake, to T-field)

Small mammal trapping in the arboretum

The general area immediately south of Yankovich Rd provides a standard area of undisturbed boreal forest for comparison with the heavily grazed forest within the Large Animal Research Station (LARS). No exact study plots are set up, I have used the area for descriptive comparisons. I plan to find more exact pairs to the forest types on the northern part of LARS.

My grad student has some plots in there somewhere.

Moss decomposition experiments off the ester expressway trail

Animal behavior class: watched squirrels on the UAF ski trails in late fall. Bog area east of smith lake

Helped out with vole trapping research behind O'Neill building, back in woods, along a transect

I worked with Pierre Deviche banding passerine birds on campus and the research involved monitoring the success of nests and following color banded birds. While Dr. Deviche is gone from UAF, the passerine populations remain a wonderful resource for research and an important part of the campus.

I worked with overwintering insects in the leaf litter behind Irving and with mammals in the fenced in area behind Irving as well.
