Campus Landscape and Outdoor Art Subcommittee (CLOA)

Meeting Notes, Sept. 26, 2004
Room 201, Bunnell Bldg.

Present:  S. Bouta, R. Wheeler, W. Croskrey, J. Alden, E. Foster, D. Horner (chair)

Absent:  P. Kastelic, M. Wright, J. Jones (ex-officio)

The CLOA held its first meeting on Monday, September 27, 2004.  Members introduced themselves and gave a brief statement about their interest in the subcommittee’s work.

Deb Horner outlined the landscape planning process, giving background on both the Campus Master Plan and the Landscape Plan.  She noted that the primary responsibility of the CLOA is to oversee the implementation of the plan.

The first task for the CLOA is to set priorities for ’04 -’05.  A list of potential priorities was given, including West Ridge and Cornerstone Plazas, Troth Yeddha Park, and a tree health survey.

Discussion ensued regarding each of the listed priorities.  Items of interest included:

1.  What is the status of the 1% for art program?  Does UAF still participate?  What state agency administers the program?  W. Croskrey noted that the program often includes some money for landscaping associated with the art work.  Wendy will gather information on the 1% for art program to share with members at the next meeting.

2.  Funding for landscaping projects is not readily available.  However, given both Steve and Judy Jones’ personal interest in the campus landscape, it is reasonable to anticipate that they will want to do some fund raising in this area.  In order to learn more about the kinds of plans that the CLOA needs to send forth in order to be considered for funding, particularly from private sources, it was decided that we should invite Jake Poole, the newly appointed VC for University Advancement and Community Engagement to our next meeting.  Ed Foster is also going to query Kathleen Schedler as to how much money might be available for actual landscape design services associated with West Ridge and Cornerstone Plazas.

3.  It was agreed that both West Ridge and Cornerstone Plazas are priorities for landscape design plans.  Ed Foster pointed out that we need to make sure that whatever plan evolves for Cornerstone must be in keeping with the potential for the Rasmuson Reading Room.  There was some discussion about the potential for the entire campus becoming an arboretum, and just what that means.  According to John Alden, President Hamilton indicated some time ago that all three campuses would be arboretums.  None of the other subcommittee members had seen any correspondence regarding this.  It was decided that a short presentation by Pat Holloway on the arboretum concept would be in order for the next meeting.  Most of the members of CLOA are not knowledgeable on the arboretum concept and just what this means.  Several members indicated that if the arboretum concept was to go forward that it should definitely show direct connections with the academic programs at UAF.  This might also help with funding.

A request to DD&C for updated drawings of both plazas will be made.

4.  Deb brought members up to date on developments with Troth Yeddha Park, given that it is at a standstill right now.  She will query Kathleen Schedler for the latest on any potential building plans close to NSF.  Steve Bouta mentioned that the CACNE members really need to be aware of the situation and bring some pressure to bear to make sure that this park becomes a reality.

5.  A tree health survey was discussed.  Both Bob Wheeler and John Alden feel that this is an important thing that needs to be done on campus.  There was discussion about the potential for having students help with the survey, particularly those studying in disciplines under SNRAS.  Bob and John will put together a presentation on how we might go about undertaking this survey that they will probably present two meetings from now.

6.  Under other, Bob Wheeler raised several issues, including soils on West Ridge Plaza, themes and species for landscaping and how that integrates with the arboretum concept, and salt on walkways and its effects on trees, shrubs and grass.

7.  The next meeting is scheduled for 9:30-11:30 on Monday, October 11, Room 201 Bunnell (School of Management).  The agenda will be forthcoming, pending confirmation by Jake Poole and Pat Holloway on their presentations.

8.  The meeting adjourned at 11:40 am.
