Campus Landscape and Outdoor Art Subcommittee (CLOA)
Present: P. Holloway, W. Croskrey, J. Alden, E. Foster, D. Horner (chair) Absent: P. Kastelic, M. Wright, S. Bouta, R. Wheeler, J. Jones (ex-officio) 1% for art Additional information regarding the 1% for art program has been coming in from various sources. Kathleen Schedler, AVC for Facilities, has the file regarding decisions made pertaining to 1% for art. Ed Foster will see what documents he can obtain and share with us. Members present agree that it is important to re-establish some sort of art on campus program. Sustainability on Campus Committee briefing D. Horner shared with the group the actions of the Sustainability on Campus committee. She feels that the CLOA should incorporate sustainability into all campus landscaping, particularly minimizing maintenance. She urged CLOA members who are interested to attend the Sustainable Campus meetings. The next one will be on Thursday, 11/11 at 3:30 pm in room 201 Bunnell. Campus art tour D. Horner reported that there is a campus art walk tour brochure that was compiled by University Relations. However, she has not seen it. There is also a campus art directory on the web that was compiled by Summer Sessions several years ago. It includes all locations of interior and exterior art, and needs some updating. However, SS is no longer interested in maintaining the site. It might be appropriate for CLOA to take over the exterior art piece of the directory. Arboretum Further discussion on the arboretum issue will be postponed until a later meeting. Fundraising for landscaping projects Jake Poole, recently appointed VC for Advancement and Community Engagement, joined the group to talk about fundraising potential for landscaping projects. Committee members all endorse the philosophy that landscaping needs to be an integral part of all projects. However, we also acknowledge that it is the landscaping piece that often gets cut from projects when funds run short. J. Poole indicated that, for his purposes, he just needs concept sketches, cost estimates, and potential donors, if we know of any. The tricky part is getting a reasonably accurate cost estimate using conceptual sketches. J. Poole indicated that the Rasmuson Reading Room is a funding priority, and part of that project should include the landscaping of Pat Holloway asked if it would be possible for students to get involved in landscaping design projects. J. Poole suggested that some donors might be interested in giving money to do a specific landscape plan. Tree inventory John Alden has been busy getting information on conducting a tree inventory. In the course of exploring inventory software, he contacted Patricia Joyner at Division of Forestry (DOF). In addition to inventory info from DOF, John has determined that it is possible to obtain a matching 15-25K tree inventory and planting grant for a “Walking Tree and Arts Campus Tour.” Several emails from John provided detail pertaining to this grant. The membership would like to explore this further and recommend that we invite Patricia Joyner to attend one of our meetings when she is in Next meeting/agenda items The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 10, from 9:30-11:30; room 222 Bunnell (outside my office). We will focus our efforts on basic landscape planning for Cornerstone and |
