The official fonts for UAF printed publications are ITC Kabel and ITC Berkeley Oldstyle. Each features a variety of styles and weights, and each is available from a variety of vendors for Macintosh and Windows operating systems. UAF does not provide the official fonts for individuals or departments because of the constraints and expense of font licensing. Users who frequently require the use of the official fonts should purchase their own copies. Fonts can be ordered directly from Adobe or any vendor offering Adobe type. In some cases, such as internal publications, alternative fonts of Helvetica/Arial or Times/Times New Roman can be substituted.
It is important to use the most basic fonts for the body text in a website . If you use a font that is not commonly used on the majority of computers, your site may not display correctly. Specifying more than one font that is similar in style will increase the chances that your page will display as you intend it to. If the first font specified in the group is not installed on your visitor's computer, the browser looks for the next font in the group to use, and so on. To use a nonstandard font, such as Kabel or Berkeley, create the words as a graphic and place it on your page that way.
Recommended font specifications for UAF websites are:
- Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif
- Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif
- Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif
- Times New Roman, Times, serif
- Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif
