FROM:                UAF University Relations

SUBJECT:           Campus Safety

DATE & TIME:     November 8, 1996

The UAF Police Department was contacted on Monday, Nov. 4, regarding an alleged sexual assault taking place in a wooded area on the West Ridge of campus. The incident allegedly occurred in late October, but only this week was brought to university attention. The victim has not filed an official police report and is unwilling to give any details such as her name or the exact nature of the assault.

In Alaska, sexual assault is categorized by degrees. Sexual assault in the first degree is most serious and typically involves penetration without consent. Sexual assault in the second degree and third degree typically involves unwelcome touching or sexual contact with someone who is mentally incapacitated or unaware that sexual contact is occurring. Rape is not a term defined by Alaska law.

UAF is committed to maintaining a safe environment for students, staff and faculty. Sexual assault is a serious crime and will not be tolerated. UAF police, the dean of student services staff, residence hall staff, and health and counseling staff are available to anyone who would like to discuss any information regarding sexual assault or sexual harassment. Any victim is encouraged to contact campus police or student services to report a crime, assist with information or obtain counseling.

While it's virtually impossible to prevent all criminal activity from occurring, UAF will continue to educate students about behavior that puts them at risk for sexual assault - both male and female students need to be informed about what is appropriate and inappropriate behavior.

Faculty, staff and students should also remember basic safety tips to help reduce risks and to report any unusual activity or suspicious circumstances to police.
