SUBJECT:               "The Thousand-Mile War - World War II in Alaska and the Aleutians"

The University of Alaska Press has published a new edition of Brian Garfield's narrative history, "The Thousand-Mile War - World War II in Alaska and the Aleutians." It's volume four in the UA Press Classic Reprint Series.

This edition includes a foreword by Terrence Cole, University of Alaska Fairbanks associate professor of history and editor of the book. Also included are more than 120 photographs, a new preface and afterword by Garfield, an updated bibliography, as well as other new information.

First published in late 1969 - and nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in history in 1970 - Garfield's book was the first independent study ever written about the only campaign of World War II fought on North American soil. It's still considered by many to be the finest one-volume history of World War II in Alaska.

Garfield, a novelist and Hollywood screenwriter whose works have sold some 20 million copies, lives with his wife in California where he continues his research and writing.

The UA Press has produced the book in both hard cover ($35.95) and paperback ($24.95) editions. Copies can be obtained from local bookstores or by contacting the UA Press, PO Box 756240, Fairbanks, Alaska, 99775-6240, or calling 907-474-6389.
