Fairbanks, Alaska University of Alaska Fairbanks Chancellor Joan Wadlow has appointed Ralph Gabrielli as Executive Dean of the College of Rural Alaska. Gabrielli has been acting dean of the college since 1992.
Im pleased to promote Dr. Gabrielli. Under his leadership as acting dean, the College of Rural Alaska has significantly increased its ability to attract external funding, has formed important partnerships with local groups and state agencies, and most importantly, has provided new programs to meet the needs of our students, said Wadlow.
As acting dean, Gabrielli has worked with CRA campuses and their directors to oversee the implementation of a new paralegal training program, a public/private partnership to provide mining technology training, an automotive electronics program and a program in allied health careers, including a two-year certificate program in rural human services.
Last December, the National Association of State Mental Health Program Providers honored Alaska's Rural Human Services Program with an award for excellence and innovation.
The program, a combination of western approaches and traditional methods of counseling and human services support, is jointly sponsored by the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, UAFs College of Rural Alaska and regional Native health corporations statewide.

Gabrielli, an associate professor of education, has been with the College of Rural Alaska (CRA) since 1987, serving as associate dean of the college from 1990 - 1992.
Gabrielli was on the faculty of Northwest Community College in Nome from 1980 - 1989. Prior to that, he served on the education faculty of the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and was the director of the Tri-County Council for Human Services, serving the counties of Essex, Clinton and Franklin in New York. Gabrielli received his undergraduate degree in 1965 from the State University of New York and his doctorate from Syracuse University in 1971
As executive dean of the College of Rural Alaska, Gabrielli is responsible for promoting and developing cooperative programs with other units throughout UAF, and also with the university system's campuses in Anchorage and Juneau to increase the effectiveness of delivery of education to rural Alaska.
The University of Alaska Board of Regents in 1992 approved a plan to reorganize the college to strengthen rural education and teacher preparation programs. CRAs outreach stretches to include five rural UAF campuses at Bethel, Dillingham, Kotzebue, Nome and the Interior-Aleutians. Also included under the CRA umbrella is the Tanana Valley Campus, located at the Downtown Center and Hutchison Career Center in Fairbanks. TVC is UAF's major vocational-technical program.
