UAF STUDENT WINS $20,000 WAL-MART COMPETITIVE EDGE SCHOLARSHIP

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 20, 1995

Fairbanks, Alaska - Under an agreement to work together to develop a 4-H youth program for the city of Bethel, the University of Alaska Fairbanks Alaska Cooperative Extension (ACE) and the city of Bethel selected Paula Stybor as the 4-H youth development program director for the new project. Stybor presently is the Bethel Youth Center director. Selected from a pool of applicants, she now holds both director titles. “Paula is perfect for the job,” said Dennis Crawford, the UAF-ACE state 4-H program leader. “As the Bethel Youth Center director, she already has direct experience with the local needs,” he said.

UAF and the city of Bethel are sharing the cost of the program and Stybor’s salary. The city of Bethel is providing telephone service and office space in the Bethel Youth Center, and ACE is providing a computer, access to the University of Alaska VAX and Internet computer system and travel funds. “Working with Bethel, this was the first opportunity for ACE to participate directly with a local government, and it’s been great,” said Crawford.

Stybor will provide assessment, planning, implementation, delivery and evaluation of youth education programs and activities related to the needs and lifestyle of young people in Bethel and southwest Alaska.
