DATE & TIME:     June 13 - 14, 2001

LOCATION:         UAF Campus

The University of Alaska Fairbanks is hosting the UAF Emerging Leaders Institute June 13 -15, 2001 on the UAF campus. Students from 70 Alaska high schools will be participating in workshops and challenge activities that are designed to improve leadership skills.

"UAF will come alive with the best and the brightest high school student leaders from throughout the state," said Carrie Dershin, UAF Emerging Leaders Institute Coordinator.

The UAF Emerging Leaders Institute will provide students an opportunity to identify and improve their leadership skills through workshops, activities and presentations including college success skills, personal leadership assessment and goal setting.

Students will participate in field leadership reaction tests where a series of missions and tasks will present themselves to challenge the students to test their cooperative, communication and listening skills. Some of the simulated environments students will face includes navigating through snake pits, balloon fields and a gorge of doom. The students will also pretend to keep top-secret information from falling into enemy hands.

Similar tests are used in training at West Point Military Academy and Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) training programs.

Keynote speakers will be Sen. Georgianna Lincoln, UA President Mark Hamilton, UAF Chancellor Marshall Lind and UAF Dean of Student Services Carla Kirts.
