FROM:                 UAF Campus Master Planning Committee

SUBJECT:            "Looking Through the Lens at UAF: The Good,Bad and Ugly!"

DATE & TIME:     Wednesday, April 25, 2001, 11 a.m.

LOCATION:         Wood Center, UAF Campus

As UAF plans for the campus of the future, it's important to know what the Fairbanks campus means to the community today. A new campus master-planning document is being built to guide growth and development at UAF, and community input is essential to forecasting the design concept.

UAF's last campus master plan was developed in 1991. Since then, the construction of the Natural Science Facility, International Arctic Research Center, MacLean Inupiat House and Student Recreation Center has taken place, as well as an ambitious program of deferred maintenance in several of UAF's older buildings.

To initiate community involvement in the process, the UAF Master Planning Committee provided 30 disposable, point-and-shoot cameras to a cross-section of university and Fairbanks community volunteers. Participants were asked to "Look Through the Lens at UAF!"

"Instead of hosting a town meeting where people got together and talked for a couple of hours, we thought we'd start the process a little differently," said UAF Chancellor Marshall Lind. "Like they say, a picture tells a thousand stories, and we asked for pictures that said, 'This is UAF!' This is what makes UAF special and defines our unique Northern character."

Participants in the community-wide photography project were also asked to snap areas that they'd like to see changed or improved on campus.

Chancellor Lind will unveil the results of the participatory photo project and comments submitted by community photographers at an exhibit on the mall in Wood Center at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 25, 2001. The public is invited to attend the opening and provide their own comments on the photo display to help develop a new UAF Campus Master Plan.
