SUBJECT                First UAF Chancellor Spotlighted in Art Exhibit

LOCATION              Wood Center on the UAF Campus

DATE & TIME          Feb. 11-29

Fairbanks artist Enid Cutler has captured more than a half century of memories of her late husband, Howard, in sketches and paintings to be displayed Feb. 11-29 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Wood Center.

Community members will have an opportunity to meet Cutler during the exhibit's opening Feb. 11 from 3-7 p.m. The exhibit, titled "Get Acquainted with Howard," features original artwork spotlighting UAF's first chancellor– a man described by his peers as a "common man with an uncommon touch."

The Cutlers came to UAF in 1962 at the request of then-president William Wood, who appointed Howard vice-president of academic affairs. In 1976, Howard Cutler became UAF's first chancellor with the support of more than 100 Fairbanks community business leaders. He oversaw UAF's research and academic programs until 1981. Under Cutler's leadership, UAF was named a sea-grant institution and developed programs in petroleum engineering, computer science and resource management.

Although Howard passed away in 1995, Enid continues extensive community involvement for which the couple was well known throughout the state.
