Subject: Life Sciences Outdoor Work

Start: April 15, 2012

End: Appr. June 15, 2012

Beginning today, Davis Constructors will begin to take advantage of our wonderful spring weather and start up site work on the west side of the building. The work is extensive between Life Sciences and Irving 1 and 2. We have the following tasks to accomplish, all of which will benefit the University greatly.

  • installation of a new cold water chiller to provide air conditioning water to Life Sciences, Irving 1/2, BiRD, Virology, and the Museum. The new system will eliminate all of the electric air conditioning units in the existing buildings, greatly reducing electrical use on West Ridge. This work requires us to dig a deep hole near the animal quarters. and trench across to Life Sciences with large pipes.
  • installation of a new propane system to Irving 1/2.
  • installation of a better storm drainage system, one that won't backup and flood Irving 2.
  • installation of new sidewalks, curbs, and asphalt paving.

The contractor estimates the work will be complete around June 10th, weather dependent. During this time, access to Irving 1 loading dock and the back doors of Irving 1/2 will be restricted to emergency egress only. We will make provisions for deliveries that are on a pallet and can be scheduled with the contractor but please try to avoid this activity as much as possible. The road to the Dear Yard will remain open at this time although there will be a few days sometime in June that we will need to cross the road with a new culvert.

Parking will not be affected with the exception of the far eastern row of parking along the concrete rails must north of the bear pens. We need to eliminate this row of parking for a while to excavate in the area to replace bad soils.

Thank you for your continued patience with this project. We are nearing the end of the work and impacts and everyone's perseverance will be well worth it!!

Roof tarring has begun on the Life Science building. The tar being used is a "low odor" and non toxic type, but you may smell it on the west ridge.

This work is expected to take 2 - 3 weeks.

It has been discovered that the propane tank supplying Irving I & II is within the excavation limits of the Life Sciences project. To continue the excavation uninterrupted, the propane will need to be turned off to the buildings, and the tank moved. The Division of Design & Construction would like to shut the propane off April 26, 2011, and it might be off for several days while the tank is relocated. If you are a propane user in one of these buildings, please email Jami Warrick at jami.warrick@alaska.edu, indicating how much propane you use, how often, and whether this shutdown will adversely affect your work.

Yukon Drive to close to west bound traffic

Due to a deep excavation along Yukon Drive for the new SNRAS Research and Teaching Greenhouse, the contractor has requested that Yukon Drive be closed to west bound traffic beginning on April 26 until May 24, 2011.

The road will be unsafe to travel on the northern edge of the west bound lane.  This will cause a detour of west bound traffic coming from lower campus along Yukon Drive with a destination of Tanana Loop.  The detour will be in effect north on Sheenjek and west on Koyukuk out to Tanana Loop.

The east bound lane that would take you from Tanana Loop east towards the Museum will remain open.   The detour will affect only through traffic and not UAF access to the rear of the Arctic Health Building.

We apologize in advance of this closure however; we must ensure the safety of everyone on campus and prevent any accidents.

Ghemm Company will have a traffic control plan in place.

April 19, 2011

Contractors working on the new Arctic Health Greenhouse will be performing work along Yukon Drive beginning on Thursday morning, April 21st and continuing throughout the day on Saturday, April 23.

Although there will be construction flaggers on site for traffic control, we advise you to please use caution when traveling in this area.

For more information, please contact Facilities Services at 474-7000.

April 13, 2011

As of  April 12, 2011, the exit out of Irving 2 east stairwell that empties out at the main level will be closed for construction.  The exit out of the building will be through the lower level stairwell exit door.  Please be aware of the changes in your exit pattern if you occupy this building.

April 6, 2011

UAF has broken ground on the new Life Sciences Facility and construction activities are ramping up quickly. As part of the new work, we will need to shut down Sheenjek Drive from Koyukuk Drive to North Tanana Loop to all thru traffic for the duration of the project. Starting April 11, 2011, fencing and barricades will close off all traffic on the road. There will be detour signs up to assist in finding buildings cut off by the closure such as the State Public Health lab. Access to the parking areas and entrances for building such as O'Neill, Elvey, Irving 1/2, etc will be via Tanana Loop west of the Akasofu building. Koyukuk Drive will continue to remain open for the next few weeks. Access to the Museum will continue to be along its normal route off of Yukon Drive and/or Sheenjek Drive.

April 1, 2011

Koyukuk Drive will be closed from 8am to noon to allow the contractor to install wires under the roadway.  The wires will run power and phones for the contractor's job trailers.

March 2011

March 24, 2011

Preliminary steps in the construction of the new Life Sciences building will begin right after the groundbreaking ceremony on March 30, 2011.

The Sheenjek parking lot (dirt parking lot) behind Irving I and Irving II will be closed off beginning March 25th until spring 2014. All vehicles, trailers, etc. need to be removed by March 25th. Parking in lot 9F (directly behind Irving I and Irving II) will be unavailable for most of the summer, depending on the Life Sciences construction schedule.

Sheenjek Drive (in front of BiRD and Virology buildings) is also slated for closure in early April. Access to the parking behind O’Neill and WRRB will be accessible via Tanana Loop, behind the Elvey building. Signs will be going up soon that will help with wayfinding and detour routes. The normally closed North Tanana Loop will be open for contractor access only so please do not use this route.

There will be some noise associated with the construction. Initially, we can expect to see and hear loaders, excavators, dump trucks, and bulldozers. The associated noise will consist of backup alarms, diesel engines, tracks on the bulldozers, air horns from the dump trucks, etc.

There will be vibration associated with gravel compaction. April will likely be the noisiest month, as this is when the head house from the old WR Greenhouse will be taken down and the major excavation will occur.

In late June, a crane will be placed behind Irving I/Irving II, and there will be noise associated with steel erection. The construction noise should lessen by September, after the steel is up.
