Construction Updates
April 26, 2012
Subject: Life Sciences Outdoor Work
Start: April 15, 2012
End: Appr. June 15, 2012
Beginning today, Davis Constructors will begin to take advantage of our wonderful spring weather and start up site work on the west side of the building. The work is extensive between Life Sciences and Irving 1 and 2. We have the following tasks to accomplish, all of which will benefit the University greatly.
- installation of a new cold water chiller to provide air conditioning water to Life Sciences, Irving 1/2, BiRD, Virology, and the Museum. The new system will eliminate all of the electric air conditioning units in the existing buildings, greatly reducing electrical use on West Ridge. This work requires us to dig a deep hole near the animal quarters. and trench across to Life Sciences with large pipes.
- installation of a new propane system to Irving 1/2.
- installation of a better storm drainage system, one that won't backup and flood Irving 2.
- installation of new sidewalks, curbs, and asphalt paving.
The contractor estimates the work will be complete around June 10th, weather dependent. During this time, access to Irving 1 loading dock and the back doors of Irving 1/2 will be restricted to emergency egress only. We will make provisions for deliveries that are on a pallet and can be scheduled with the contractor but please try to avoid this activity as much as possible. The road to the Dear Yard will remain open at this time although there will be a few days sometime in June that we will need to cross the road with a new culvert.
Parking will not be affected with the exception of the far eastern row of parking along the concrete rails must north of the bear pens. We need to eliminate this row of parking for a while to excavate in the area to replace bad soils.
Thank you for your continued patience with this project. We are nearing the end of the work and impacts and everyone's perseverance will be well worth it!!
