Library Science Instruction

Core Curriculum and LS101

Library and Information Strategies | Course Catalog Descriptions | Schedule of Classes | Course-related Instruction/Upper Division | Small Group Instruction

Undergraduate baccalaureate study at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is characterized by a common set of learning experiences known as the Core Curriculum. The core provides students with a shared foundation of skills and knowledge that, when combined with specialized study in the major and other specific degree requirements, is designed to prepare students to better meet the demands of life in the 21st century.

Library and Information Strategies

Library and Information Strategies is part of the Core Curriculum requirements needed for graduation. To fulfill this core requirement you may choose either one of the following two options:

  • Complete the one-credit course by registering for a classroom section on Fairbanks main campus OR a Web-based section, OR a correspondence section offered via the Center for Distance Education.

Center for Distance Education and Independent Learning
    Email: distance@uaf.edu
    Phone: 907-474-5353

  • Pass the LS 101 Competency Exam, administered by UAF's Testing Services. You may take the test twice if necessary. The test is offered twice each semester at scheduled times or by individual appointment. Contact Testing Services, located in Signer's Hall, for the schedule of dates and times and current exam fees. NOTE: You may not take the exam if you are registered for the LS 101 course.

Course-related Instruction/Upper Division

Course-related instruction sessions offer instruction on resources and search strategies appropriate to a particular discipline and/or class project or assignment. Contact the Diane Ruess, at: ffder @ uaf.edu or 474-6349 with questions.

When planning your request please consider the following suggestions:

  • Two weeks advance notice is greatly appreciated. The sooner you call the more likely we can accommodate your schedule and have adequate preparation time for your class.

  • Provide relevant information that will assist the librarian preparing to teach your class.

Small Group Instruction

Small groups of UAF students may schedule a library instruction session by appointment. Small-group instruction is especially beneficial when a group of interested students wants to learn to use a specific information tool (a database, the catalog, a periodical index) or wishes to learn about a specific area of the library (Government Documents, Archives, etc.).

To schedule a small group session contact:
