The Large Animal Research Station conducts
public tours of animal enclosures during the summer months, June through September. These
tours allow the visitor a closer view of the muskoxen, caribou and reindeer maintained at
LARS for research and education.
The tour presenters have a background in the
natural sciences and are specially trained in the biology of the animals
maintained at LARS. They
offer a unique and very informative description of:
The natural history and ecology of animals which lived
during the last ice age, and are the only successful large terrestrial mammals to
continuously occupy
the arctic for the past 10,000 years.
Specialized adaptations that allow existence in the arctic
year-round.
An overview of current and past research efforts, and how
this effort is crucial for understanding and managing wild populations for continued
survival.
