The Large Animal Research Station breeds and
maintains colonies of captive muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus), barren-ground caribou (Rangifer
tarandus granti) and reindeer (R. tarandus tarandus) for use in biological
research. An effort is made to introduce and a maintain a level of tractability in the
animals which make them well-suited for interactive, controlled studies. In the past, the
animals have been used for studies of behavior, nutritional physiology, forage
digestibility, endocrinology, energetics, reproduction and lactation, and veterinary
medicine. Animals have been used as well for testing and calibrating equipment and
techniques prior to deployment in the field. Conditions
for the experimental use of animals:
- A per diem charge for experimental or instructional use of
an animal is calculated on the actual cost of maintenance and care. It includes the cost
of regular feed, routine vet care, animal enclosure maintenance, and the involvement of a
technician in insuring protocols are maintained.
- An hourly charge for special animal handling covers the
cost of technical assistance in safe and efficient animal movement and restraint for
sampling and measurements.
- Per diem charges will be charged for days animals are
excluded from other uses -- e.g., while on special diets or treatments -- or on days
designated for handling or sampling.
