Helge Ingstad was a Norwegian explorer who spent
time in Anaktuvuk Pass in 1949-1950, living and
studying with the Nunamiut people of Anaktuvuk
Pass, Alaska.
When he was preparing to leave, the
native elders of the area symbolically gave Ingstad
a mountain in the area as their thanks to him.
The
U.S. Board of Geographic Names officially named
the mountain on April 17, 2006, thanks to the
efforts of Senator Ted Stevens and Ambassador Knut
Vollebaek, at the request of Grant Spearman of the
Simon Paneak Memorial Museum.
