Mission Statement

The ultimate goal of Wood In Transportation is stewardship - the management, protection, and better use - of America's forests. Through focused technical and financial assistance, Wood In Transportation can lead to improved and expanded markets for forest-based goods and services. These markets create economic expansion opportunities that in turn provide venues for using underutilized wood - a way to improve the overall health and sustainability of the forest (stewardship).

In Alaska, specific goals would be: 1.) to institutionalize the use of local wood for improving and expanding transportation-related infrastructure, and 2.). to improve the utilization of Alaskan wood species for transportation structures by focusing on eliminating the technical barriers that have hindered past efforts and by addressing the needs of the Alaska's timber industry and by eliminating the technical barriers that have hindered past efforts. An Alaskan WIT Program has the potential to have significant economic impact on the rural forest-based communities throughout the state.
