Application Process

Step 1

Student contacts John Smelter (, 474-1849) to obtain procedures and requirements for an Interdisciplinary Degree.

Step 2 

If you are not currently a UAF student or you are a non-degree seeking or general studies student at UAF, you need to apply for admission at the UAF Office of Admissions. If you are currently in a degree program at UAF you do not need to reapply to the interdisciplinary program.

Step 3   

Prepare a typewritten cover letter outlining:

  • Academic and career goals
  • The degree being sought:
    • A.A.S. (minimum of 60 credits required)
    • B.A.A.S (requires an earned Associate of Applied Science and a minimum of 120 credits)
    • B.A. or B.S. (minimum of 130 credits required)
  • An explanation of how the proposed degree differs from established UAF programs

    Step 4

Contact faculty (three minimum) to serve as your INDS committee (one faculty member will serve as the chairperson/advisor). One committee meeting of the full committee is required. At this meeting, the committee reviews your plan and discusses proposed classes. The student in coordination with the committee finalizes the degree worksheet.

The student submits the entire application packet to the Academic Advising Center, who will forward it for the remaining signatures and final processing.

Step 9  

When your interdisciplinary program is approved, you will receive an acceptance letter in the mail.  Any changes to the approved curriculum are made only with the approval of the faculty committee and submitted on an “UAF Undergraduate Petition” form and signed by all necessary parties.  Once the petition is approved, it must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar.


Application Deadlines

Undergraduate Program:

A.A.S., B.A., B.S. and B.A.A.S.:

Freshman and transfer applications for the A.A.S. Interdisciplinary degree program are due no later than July 1 for the Fall semester and November 1 for the Spring semester.
