Course Material
Although you must be enrolled in the
course to access the quizzes, the content is available
at http://www.uaf.edu/iacuc/training/index.html as
a resource for UAF faculty, staff, students and affiliates.
Educational
Requirements
All
individuals working with live vertebrates must complete a formal
educational program prior to starting their work and will be
expected to peridocially complete a continuing education program.
This is a vital component of our Animal Care Program and is
required under a variety of regulations and guidelines. To
accomodate this requirement the University of Alaska Fairbanks
offers "Principles
of Humane Animal Care & Use", a web based training
program utilizing Blackboard, the University's web course delivery
program. This approach allows all faculty,
staff, students and visitors to complete the program whenever
needed and from wherever they have internet access. Please
read and follow all course instructions!
How to enroll
Contact
the Office of Research Integrity to
enroll in the course and to determine which modules and quizzes
you will need to complete. Individuals performing anesthesia,
wildlife immobilization, and/or surgery may also need to demonstrate
competence and complete hands-on training through UAF Veterinary
Services. Documenting prior experience and/or prior training
may minimize this requirement.
Inappropriate Use of the UAF IACUC
Web Based Training
UAF requires completion of the web based IACUC
training course as a condition to access animal facilities and
to work with live vertebrates in the field or laboratory. The
content of each module should be reviewed prior to attempting
the associated quiz. It is permissible to view the quizzes and
use them as a learning tool while you review module content.
After review of module content you may retake quizzes until you
achieve a passing score. However, it is inappropriate to repeatedly
retake quizzes without reviewing the module content first.
The purposeful subversion of the intent of the
course, providing quiz answers to colleagues and/or “gaming” the
software is unethical and qualifies as research/academic misconduct.
The UAF Animal Care Program relies on performance
based standards to assess procedures and techniques as well as
competence of personnel. Although important, successful completion
of the web-based course may not be sufficient to maintain access
to animal facilities and permission to use animals in research
or teaching. These privileges may be revoked if you cannot demonstrate
basic knowledge or understanding of the material covered in the
IACUC training modules.
Thank you for helping to maintain the integrity
research and teaching at UAF.
